THE CUTTER FAMILY OF NEW ENGLAND
FOUR HUNDRED YEARS

Wherever the CUTTER's may have had their origin, it is certain that the emigrant ancestors of the family in New England lived, prior to their emigration to America, in Newcastle Upon-Tyne. This is an ancient city and river-port of Northumberland County, England, situated on the left bank of the Tyne, ten miles from it's mouth in the North Sea, not far from the borders of Scotland.

First Generation in America: Elizabeth LEATHERHEAD CUTTER, widow of Samuel CUTTER, was about 65 years old when she and her son, Richard CUTTER, in about 1640, left their native land. Her son, William CUTTER, had migrated prior to this time but later returned to England without issue. Elizabeth died at Cambridge, MA, 10 Jan 1663, aged about 89 years, and left a property, which according to her inventory, amounted to L19-4s-6d. Her will and inventory of her personal estate are found in the Registry of Probate for Middlesex County, MA.

Second Generation: Richard CUTTER,son of Elizabeth LEATHERHEAD CUTTER and Samuel CUTTER, was a voyager on the ship with his mother. He was probably under 20 years of age and unmarried. He was a cooper by trade and the small oaken chest, made to keep his clothes in when he apprenticed, was in the possession of his descendent, Richard CUTTER, of Woburn, MA, in 1885. He married Elizabeth WILLIAMS, daughter of Robert WILLIAMS and Elizabeth STALHAM, in 1644, in Cambridge, MA, and they had 7 children. Their residence was in Menotomy (a part of Cambridge). Elizabeth died in 1661 and in 1662 Richard married a widow, Frances PERRIMAN EMSDEN (AMSDEN) and they had 7 children. Frances was still living when Richard died in 1693. He is buried at Cambridge. William was a carpenter (or "house wright') by trade. He died in 1723 and is buried in Cambridge and Rebecca died in 1751.
